The Old English Period in Bengali
The Old English Period “অ্যাংলো-স্যাক্সন পিরিয়ড” নামে সুপরিচিত। এই যুগের সময়কাল 450থেকে 1066 সাল পর্যন্ত। এটি পঞ্চম শতাব্দীর মাঝামাঝি শুরু হয়েছিল। বেডের মতে, (প্রাথমিক মধ্যযুগের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ শিক্ষক এবং লেখক) অ্যাংলো-স্যাক্সন পিরিয়ড শুরু হয়েছিল 449 খ্রিস্টাব্দে যখন Jutes, Angles, and Saxons জাতি ইংরেজ উপজাতিদের পরাজিত করে জার্মানি থেকে ইংল্যান্ডেআসে । তারপর 1066 সালে, জার্মান স্যাক্সনরা ফ্রান্সের নরম্যানদের হাতে পরাজিত হয় এবং Anglo-Saxon Period এর পরিসমাপ্তি হয়।

- Most of the literary works are anonymous.
- Paganism dominates the literary spirit of the time, though.
- Christianity is also traceable.
- Strong belief in Fate is reflected.
- Monsters symbolize evil.
- Absent of Romantic love.
- Respectful attitude to women.
- Sea adventures, savagery, and heroic activities are respected.
- Metaphors were more used in literature, but similes were used less.
- Alliteration, the repetition of the same sound (literary device derived from Latin, meaning “letters of the alphabet), is used as the chief ornamental device, and all alliterative syllables are stressed.
- Kennings means compound words are widely used in literature instead of single words.
- Mismatch of syllables in the verse line.
- The end rhyme is ignored.
