Juan to be perfect She teaches him books She ignores his emotions Byron mocks this false morality He says society teaches rules not truth Don Juan then meets Donna Julia She is a married woman Her husband is Don Alfonso Julia and Juan fall in love Their love is natural and emotional Society calls it sin When Don Alfonso discovers the affair a comic search scene follows He looks for Juan in the house Juan hides in the bed Byron uses humour here He shows how society pretends to be moral but behaves foolishly Byron clearly says I want a hero an uncommon want This line shows his purpose He rejects false heroic ideals In the end Don Juan is blamed Julia suffers shame Juan is sent away from Spain Thus Canto I shows that society is hypocritical It punishes natural love It hides its own corruption Byron uses wit and irony to expose this truth
