Write a note on the character of Captain Bluntschli on the basis of your reading of Arms and the Man NU Captain Bluntschli is the most important character in G B Shaw s - play Arms and the Man He is the mouthpiece of the playwright Through him Shaw attacks false ideas about war heroism and romantic love Bluntschli is very different from the proud and romantic soldiers shown at the beginning of the play He is practical honest and realistic By creating Bluntschli Shaw shows that real life is not like romantic stories Bluntschli represents common sense and reality in the play Bluntschli as a Practical Soldier Bluntschli is a professional soldier not a romantic hero In this play he is fighting the war only as a job He does not fight for glory or patriotism When he meets Raina he clearly says that he is a Swiss man

He even says that he joined the Serbian army because it came first on his way from Switzerland He says I am a Swiss fighting merely as a professional soldier This shocks Raina who believes that soldiers fight for honor and love of country Bluntschli believes that the main duty of a soldier is to stay alive At one point in the bedroom scene Raina mocks that Bluntschli is afraid of death Bluntschli reveals that all soldiers are afraid of death All of them dear lady all of them Through this idea Shaw shows that war is not glorious but dangerous and foolish The Chocolate Cream Soldier Bluntschli becomes famous for carrying chocolates instead of bullets This habit makes him look funny but it shows his wisdom Raina thinks he is childish But Bluntschli says that soldiers are not heroes or superhumans A hungry soldier cannot fight He says You can t fight on an empty stomach So he prefers food to weapons Raina is shocked when she hears this This detail destroys the romantic picture of a brave soldier with shining weapons Shaw uses this to mock false heroism Bluntschli shows that war is about survival not bravery Critic of False Heroism Bluntschli openly criticizes Sergius s cavalry charge Raina thinks this charge is heroic Bluntschli calls it foolish He explains that Sergius attacked machine guns with cavalry The attack only succeeded because the enemy soldiers had the wrong bullets and could not shoot back Bluntschli compares this attack with Throwing peas at a window He compares Sergius to Don Quixote a foolish knight from the novel Don Quixote who fought windmills thinking they were giants This comparison makes Sergius look ridiculous Through Bluntschli Shaw shows that romantic heroism often leads to stupidity and danger Attitude to Love Bluntschli is also realistic about love He does not believe in showy romance He talks honestly to Raina He does not flatter her or pretend to worship her as Serious does This honesty attracts Raina slowly She feels relaxed with him She admits that he is the first man who did not take her seriously You are the first man I ever met who did not take me seriously Bluntschli s attitude shows that real love is based on truth and understanding not empty words Symbol of Reality Throughout the play Bluntschli stands for reality and reason He exposes false ideas about war love and heroism He is calm sensible and intelligent In the end he becomes successful and respected He inherits hotels and becomes wealthy This ending proves Shaw s message that practical people succeed in life Romantic dreamers like Sergius fail In conclusion Captain Bluntschli is the mouthpiece of Shaw s ideas in Arms and the Man He breaks romantic illusions and shows the truth of life He is not a traditional hero but he is the true hero of the play
