life. Oroonoko’s love story begins when Oroonoko goes to visit Imoinda’s family. He wants to honor the dead general’s family by bringing them gifts. When Oroonoko sees Imoinda for the first time, he is immediately amazed by her beauty and grace. She is not only beautiful but also kind and intelligent. As soon as their eyes meet, they fall deeply in love. Imoinda also admires Oroonoko for his bravery, nobility, and handsome looks. The narrator describes Orookono in the following manner:
“There could be nothing in nature more beautiful, agreeable, and handsome.”
Expression of Love: Oroonoko begins to court (woo) Imoinda with love and respect. The two love and respect each other. So, they do not want to consume their love before marriage. They promise to marry. Oroonoko promises that she will be the only woman he ever loves. Imoinda, equally in love, accepts his promise, and they agree to marry each other.
Obstacles and Separation: However, before they can marry, Oroonoko seeks approval from his grandfather, the king. Unfortunately, the king himself desires Imoinda. He uses the “Royal Veil” tradition to take Imoinda, one of his many wives. He sends her the Royal Veil. Oroonoko and Imoinda secretly meet and make love. When the king finds out, he sells Imoinda into slavery. He also lies to Oroonoko that Imoinda is dead. This cruel twist separates the lovers.
In short, Oroonoko and Imoind’s love is pure and strong. However, their love is destroyed by the king’s selfishness. Their story becomes one of suffering and sacrifice.
