It is a strange desire to seek power and to lose liberty nbsp This line is taken from Francis Bacon s - Of Great Place In this line Bacon says that people often want power but they do not see the price of it They think power will give them freedom But power takes freedom away This makes the desire strange Bacon explains that when a man rises to a high post he loses control over his own life He must obey the ruler He must serve the state He must follow orders in the London court or in Whitehall He cannot act as he wishes His time and choices are no longer his own Bacon also says that a man in power becomes a public figure Everyone watches him Everyone judges him He cannot speak freely He cannot live simply He must protect his name every day Fame becomes

a chain It holds him tightly It takes away his liberty Another truth is that a powerful man becomes a servant of work His life is filled with meetings papers and problems He must listen to many people He must make hard decisions He must stay busy from morning to night Even when he grows old he cannot rest easily Work controls him So Bacon says the desire for power is strange because it takes the very thing people expect to gain A man tries to rise high But the higher he rises the less free he becomes Power brings honour but it also brings loss of liberty This is the strange truth Bacon wants the reader to see
