Explain with reference No man at all can be living forever and we must be satisfied NU This line is spoken by Maurya the central character of Riders to the Sea a one-act tragedy by J M Synge - The play is set on the Aran Islands where life is ruled by the sea The sea provides livelihood but it also takes lives Maurya has already lost her husband father-in-law and five sons to the sea At the time of this speech she had lost Michael and soon after her last son Bartley also died After Bartley s death Maurya realizes that the sea has taken everything from her She understands that human beings are powerless before nature By saying this line Maurya accepts the harsh truth of life She understands that no human can live forever Death is natural and unavoidable Her long suffering teaches her patience and wisdom

She no longer fears the sea because it cannot take anything more from her This acceptance gives her a strange kind of peace The line expresses the main theme of the play Human life is fragile Nature is stronger than man True peace comes from acceptance not resistance Maurya s words show tragic wisdom and emotional maturity The line reflects the calm ending of a deeply tragic life
