combs for Della s hair Their gifts cannot be used in the end Jim has no watch Della has no hair But this does not reduce the value of their gifts Their gifts show their hearts They show sacrifice They show true love The writer calls them the wisest because wisdom does not come from money It comes from the heart It comes from giving something precious for the happiness of another person Jim and Della do this happily Their love grows stronger even when their gifts fail The writer gives them the highest honor by calling them the Magi He means they have the same purity wisdom and kindness as the first gift givers of history
