Analyze the role of Portia in the play The Merchant of Venice Portia is one of the main characters in The Merchant of Venice She is one of the most lovable heroines of William Shakespeare - She is a rich wise brave and kind woman who lives in Belmont She helps people around her and her actions change the story She stands for love mercy and justice Here we take a closer look at Portia in this play Portia as a Rich Heiress Portia is a beautiful and rich heiress in Belmont Her father left her great wealth He also left a special will Portia could only marry the man who chose the right casket There are three caskets gold silver and lead Many princes try their luck but fail Portia only waits and wishes for a loving husband because she respects her father s will She feels lonely and

says sadly I may neither choose whom I would nor refuse whom I Dislike Porita s wealth attracts many suitors but she wishes for love Portia as a Loving Wife Portia finally finds love Bassanio a young Venetian comes to Belmont to win Portia s hand Portia likes him at first sight She hopes this gentleman will choose the right casket Bassanio picks the lead casket This is the right casket and it has Portia s picture inside Portia becomes very happy Now the couple can marry She says to Bassanio Myself and what is mine to you and yours Is now converted This line shows Portia s love and devotion to her husband She gives Bassanio her heart and her wealth Portia also gives him a ring as a sign of love and says never to lose it Portia as a Wise and Brave Lawyer Earlier in the play Antonio took a loan from Shylock to help his friend Bassanio As he is unable to repay in time Shylock wants to cut a pound of flesh from Antonio s body When Portia hears that Antonio is in danger she decides to help She disguises herself as a young lawyer named Balthazar In the trial scene Portia makes a clever point that the bond agreement says a pound of flesh not blood So Shylock can take the pound of flesh but cannot shed any blood She says to Shylock Shed thou no blood nor cut thou less nor more But just a pound of flesh Since it is impossible Shylock loses the case Portia s wise act saves Antonio s life Portia as a Symbol of Mercy and Justice Portia embodies mercy and justice In the trial scene she says Shylock should show mercy She gives a beautiful speech about mercy She says showing mercy is a godly quality The quality of mercy is not strain'd It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven However Shylock does not listen He is not ready to take ten times the money that is owed to him He only wants to cut the pound of flesh and harm Antonio So Portia brings Shylock to justice In this scene Portia balances mercy and justice perfectly She teaches everyone in the court the value of kindness Portia in the Ring Episode After saving Antonio Portia wants to test Bassanio s loyalty Still disguised as the young lawyer she asks Bassanio for his ring as a reward Bassanio hesitates because he does not want to upset Portia by losing the ring Finally he gives away the ring for his friendship with Antonio Later in Belmont Portia shows the ring and reveals she is the young lawyer Bassanio feels very sorry for giving it away Portia laughs and forgives him Here Portia proves her love once again The audience understands lovingly how playful and wise Portia can be In conclusion Portia is a very important character She is wealthy wise loving and brave She saves Antonio teaches about mercy and trusts Bassanio Portia's story shows women can be heroes too Her actions make the play fantastic and memorable nbsp
