English Summary

Lucy’s Location: At the beginning of the poem, the poet describes the life of a girl named Lucy. She lived in a lonely place near the Dove spring, where no one ever went. There was no one to admire her beauty. Very few people loved her.

Description of Lucy’s Beauty: Lucy was like a violet flower. This violet flower remains half-hidden behind mossy stones. This makes it almost invisible to people. Like the flower, Lucy was also unnoticed. The poet then compares Lucy to the evening star, Venus. This star shines alone in the western sky during the evening.
