Write a summary of the poem Death of a Naturalist The poem Death of a Naturalist by Seamus Heaney tells the story of a young boy who first loves nature and later becomes afraid of it In the beginning he enjoys the flax-dam The place is dirty and hot It smells bad But he does not mind He watches bubbles in the water He hears insects buzzing He sees dragonflies and butterflies He feels excited He loves frogspawn the most He collects it in jars He keeps the jars at home and at school He waits for the tiny black dots to become tadpoles His teacher explains how frogs live She says the daddy frog is a bullfrog She says the mammy frog lays many eggs The boy listens with joy He loves learning about nature He feels safe Then one very hot day everything changes He goes back to

the flax-dam But now the place feels scary The air is thick The frogs look big and angry They make a loud deep sound They sit on the mud like heavy shapes Their necks move like sails Some hop Some make sharp ugly noises The boy feels sick He feels they are warning him He thinks they want revenge He becomes frightened He runs away The poem shows how his childhood love of nature dies He no longer sees beauty He sees danger This is the death of a naturalist
