Write a summary of the poem The Collar George Herbert s iconic poem is The Collar The poem shows a man who is very angry He feels tired of his life He feels he has no joy He feels he only suffers He thinks his life gives him nothing good He wants to break all rules He wants freedom He wants to go anywhere he likes He says his life should be free like the wind He says he will not obey anymore He thinks about his past He says there was joy before There was wine There was corn There were good things But now he sees only pain He feels his whole year has been wasted He feels he has no reward He has no flowers He has no success He feels empty Then he tries to change his mind He says he still has strength He says

he can still find joy He tells himself to stop worrying He tells himself to forget the cage he made in his own mind He says these small fears tied him down He thinks he should break free He says he will go out He says he will not be afraid He says a man who does not work for his needs deserves his hard life He becomes more wild He becomes angrier But then he hears a soft voice The voice calls him Child The voice is God His anger stops He becomes calm He answers My Lord
