এই প্রেম যেন এক অদ্ভুত আর উচ্চতায় অবস্থিত কোনো বস্তু; যা ধরা যায় না

3. It was begotten by Despair

This love was born from deep sadness

এই প্রেমের জন্ম হয়েছে হতাশা থেকে…

4. Upon Impossibility.

And this love was born from impossibility.

আর এই প্রেমের জন্ম হয়েছে অসম্ভবতা থেকে। অর্থাৎ এই প্রেমের পরিণয় অসম্ভব।

[This means the speaker’s love is special but this love will never be fulfilled. The lovers can never come closer. Though their love is deep and pure, their love is impossible. This creates despair.]

Stanza 2

5. Magnanimous Despair alone

Only noble and deep despair

শুধু মহৎ ও গভীর হতাশাই

6. Could show me so divine a thing

Could show me such a heavenly, pure love.

আমাকে এমন এক স্বর্গীয় প্রেম অনুভব করতে দিয়েছে।

7. Where feeble Hope could ne’er have flown,

Weak hope could never reach this kind of love.

দুর্বল আশা কখনোই এমন প্রেমে পৌঁছাতে পারত না।

8. But vainly flapp’d its tinsel wing.

Hope just tried and failed with its weak effort.

আশা শুধু তার চকচকে পাখা নাড়িয়ে ব্যর্থ হত।

[অর্থাৎ প্রেমিকের এই হতাশায় ভরা অসম্ভব ভালবাসায় Hope/আশার কোনো স্থান নেই। অর্থাৎ, প্রেমিক মূলত দুঃখ করছে, তার ও তার প্রেমিকার ভালবাসা গভীর ও বিশুদ্ধ হলেও, তা হতাশায় ভরা। এই ভালবাসার মিলন হওয়া অসম্ভব। এই ভালবাসার পূর্ণতা পাওয়ার কোনো আশা নেই।] 

Stanza 3

9. And yet I quickly might arrive

Still, I could have reached my beloved easily

তবুও আমি সহজেই আমার প্রেমিকার কাছে পৌঁছাতে পারতাম

10. Where my extended soul is fixt,

Because my soul is already joined with her’s,

কারণ আমার আত্মা তার সাথে এক হয়ে গেছে,

11. But Fate does iron wedges drive,

But fate puts strong iron bar between us,

কিন্তু ভাগ্য আমাদের মাঝে লোহার মত শক্ত বাধা দেয়,

12. And always crowds itself betwixt.

It always stands between us.

ভাগ্য সবসময় আমাদের মাঝখানে এসে দাঁড়ায়।

Stanza 4

13. For Fate with jealous eye does see

Fate sees our perfect love with jealousy

ভাগ্য আমাদের নিখুঁত প্রেমকে ঈর্ষার চোখে দেখে

14. Two perfect loves, nor lets them close;

It does not allow two perfect lovers to be together;

ভাগ্য দুই নিখুঁত প্রেমিক-প্রেমিকাকে এক হতে দেয় না;

15. Their union would her ruin be,

Because if they unite, fate would lose its power,

কারণ তারা এক হলে, ভাগ্য তার শক্তি হারাবে,

16. And her tyrannic pow’r depose.

It would destroy fate’s cruel rule.

তারা এক হলে ভাগ্যের নিষ্ঠুর শাসন নষ্ট হয়ে যাবে।

Stanza 5

17. And therefore her decrees of steel

So fate made unchangeable laws

এইজন্য ভাগ্য কঠোর নিয়ম তৈরি করেছে

18. Us as the distant poles have plac’d,

That placed us far apart like the North and South Poles,

যা আমাদের উত্তর ও দক্ষিণ মেরুর মতো দূরে রেখেছে,

19. (Though love’s whole world on us doth wheel)

Even though our love is the center of the whole world

যদিও আমাদের প্রেমই যেন পুরো প্রেম-জগতের কেন্দ্র

20. Not by themselves to be embrac’d;

Still, we cannot hold each other;

তবুও আমরা একে অপরকে জড়িয়ে ধরতে পারি না;

Stanza 6

21. Unless the giddy heaven fall,

We can only come to each other if the sky suddenly falls,

আমরা শুধুমাত্র এক হতে পারি যদি হঠাৎ আকাশ ভেঙে পড়ে,

22. And earth some new convulsion tear;

And the earth shakes in a new disaster;

বা পৃথিবীতে নতুন কোনো বিপর্যয় ঘটে;

23. And, us to join, the world should all

And to bring us together, the whole world must

আর আমাদের এক করতে হলে, পুরো পৃথিবীকে

24. Be cramp’d into a planisphere.

Be folded into a small flat map.

একটা ছোট্ট সমতল মানচিত্রে রূপ নিতে হবে।

Stanza 7

25. As lines, so loves oblique may well

Like slanting lines, other loves may meet

তির্যক রেখার মতো, অন্য প্রেমিক-প্রেমিকারা এক হতে পারে

26. Themselves in every angle greet;

They meet at some angle;

তারা কোন না কোন কোণে একত্র হয়;

27. But ours so truly parallel,

But our love is so perfectly straight and parallel,

কিন্তু আমাদের প্রেম এতটাই সোজা ও সমান্তরাল লাইনের মত যে,

28. Though infinite, can never meet.

That even though endless, it will never touch.

তা অসীম হলেও কখনো এক হতে পারবে না।

Stanza 8

29. Therefore the love which us doth bind,

So, the love that connects us,

তাই, যে প্রেম আমাদের যুক্ত করেছে,

30. But Fate so enviously debars,

This love is cruelly blocked by jealous fate,

আর নিষ্ঠুর ভাগ্য যে প্রেমকে সফল হতে দেয় না,

31. Is the conjunction of the mind,

Our love is a joining of minds, not bodies,

আমাদের এই ভালবাসা মনের সাথে মনের মিলন, শরীরের নয়,

32. And opposition of the stars.

But the stars (fate) are against our love.

কিন্তু নক্ষত্রেরা (ভাগ্য) আমাদের প্রেমের বিরুদ্ধে।
