লরা মিসেস স্কটের সাথে দেখা করে: পার্টি শেষ হয়ে গেলে কিছু খাবার অবশিষ্ট থেকে যায়। তাই লরার মা প্রস্তাব দেয় এই খাবারগুলো তাদের আশেপাশের গরিবদের বিলিয়ে দেওয়া যায়। লরা এ বিষয়টি ঠিকভাবে নিতে পারেনা। সে মনে করে অবশিষ্ট খাবার দিয়ে মানবিকতা দেখানো উপহাস মাত্র। যাইহোক, লরা শোকার্ত পরিবারের জন্য পার্টির অবশিষ্ট খাবারের একটি ঝুড়ি নিয়ে যায়। তার বাড়ির জাঁকজমক এবং কুটিরের সরলতার মধ্যে বৈসাদৃশ্য তাকে গভীরভাবে প্রভাবিত করে। লরাকে দেখে সেই বাড়ির লোকেরা সমীহের দৃষ্টিতে দেখে বিশেষ করে মিসেস স্কটের বোন তোষামোদি ভাষায় কথাবার্তা বলতে থাকে। 

লরার উপলব্ধি: প্রথমে লরা ভেবেছিল খাবারটি তাদের দিয়েই চলে আসবে। কিন্তু মিসেস স্কটের বোন তাকে লাশটি একবারের জন্য দেখে যেতে বলে। তাই লরা লাশটি দেখতে যায় এবং সে লাশটি দেখে উপলব্ধি করতে পারে যে মানুষের মধ্যে ধনী গরীবের ভেদাভেদ একমাত্র মৃত্যুই ঘুঁচিয়ে দিতে পারে। লরা লাশটিকে দেখে অজান্তেই কান্না করতে থাকে আর এদিকে লড়ার বাড়িতে ফিরা বিলম্ব দেখে তার ভাই লরি এগিয়ে এলো। কিন্তু সে দেখতে পায় লরা  সম্ভবত কাঁদছে তাই জিজ্ঞাসা করে যে সে কাঁদছে কিনা। এটা শুনে লরা তার ভাইয়ের হাত ধরে আরো জোরে ফুঁপিয়ে কান্না শুরু করে। 

গল্পের শেষে, লরার একটি উপলব্ধি আসে। সে বোঝে জীবন সুখ-দুঃখের এক জটিল মিশ্রণ। পার্টির উত্সব এবং কুটিরের দুঃখ উভয়ের সাথেই তার অভিজ্ঞতা  জীবনের জটিলতা সম্পর্কে নতুন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি দেয়।
