In “Mother Courage and Her Children” (1941), Kattrin is the mute daughter of Mother Courage. She cannot speak, but she shows her heart through action. At the end, near Halle in Germany, her silence becomes a sacrifice. Her tragic death is unforgettable.

Kattrin’s Suffering in War: From the Prologue, Kattrin pulls the wagon with Eilif and Swiss Cheese. She is attacked by soldiers and scarred. She listens when Yvette sings,

“Scarce seventeen was I when

The foe came to our land”. 

Mother Courage warns her daughter, Kattrin, not to trust soldiers. Her silent pain builds the ground for her final act.

atholic soldiers prepare for a surprise attack on the sleeping town. Peasants beg Kattrin to stay quiet. But she sees the danger. She remembers children in the city. Her heart cannot accept the silence. She decides to act.

The Drum and Death: Kattrin climbs on the farmhouse roof. She beats a drum again and again. Soldiers try to stop her. They shoot, but she continues. The villagers hear the alarm. She saves them. Then she falls dead. Mother Courage returns to find her daughter gone. Kattrin’s death is heroic. Her sacrifice proves Brecht’s message: even the weak can resist war.

Kattrin dies because she wants to save others. She suffers in war. She sees danger near Halle. She warns people by beating the drum. The mute girl gives the loudest cry. Her sacrifice shows the deep cruelty of war.
