ContributorDiscuss the main principles of Communicative Language Teaching Why is CLT considered an approach rather than a method NU Communicative Language Teaching CLT is one of the most important approaches in English Language Teaching It originated in Europe in the s as a response to older methods such as the Grammar-Translation and Audio-Lingual Methods These methods focused more on grammar rules and accuracy but ignored real-life use of language CLT stresses communication as the main goal of language learning Linguists like Dell Hymes Wilkins and Widdowson shaped its principles Today CLT is widely practiced worldwide Communication as a Central Goal The first principle of CLT is that language means communication Knowing grammar is not enough unless learners can use it in real situations Fluency is valued alongside accuracy Students are encouraged to use language in everyday tasks like giving directions making requests or solving problems Errors are tolerated if the
meaning is clear This makes learners more confident and willing to speak Thus CLT gives priority to communication nbsp Learner Centeredness Another principle is that the learner is at the center of the classroom The teacher acts as a facilitator and guide He does not act as the authority only Learners work in pairs and groups share ideas and solve tasks together This creates an interactive learning environment Students become active communicators instead of passive listeners The classroom becomes a space for a real exchange of meaning Integration of Skills CLT promotes integration of the four skills These skills include listening speaking reading and writing Unlike older methods that stressed reading or grammar only CLT combines skills in one activity For example students may listen to an announcement discuss it in pairs read a related text and then write a short reply This holistic practice reflects real-life use of language It also helps learners develop balanced competence in English nbsp Use of Authentic Materials CLT encourages the use of authentic and meaningful materials Teachers bring newspapers menus maps or TV clips into class These materials expose students to real language and culture Tasks are based on real-life needs not artificial sentences Functional language like apologizing inviting or agreeing is emphasized Students also practice discourse competence which means linking ideas in longer conversations This principle prepares them for practical communication CLT as an Approach CLT is considered an approach not a method A method is fixed and has strict techniques like the Grammar Translation or Audio-Lingual Method CLT does not give one rigid set of rules It gives a broad philosophy language is best learned through communication Teachers may use many techniques such as role-plays projects debates or task-based learning as long as communication is central As Richards and Rodgers say CLT is flexible and adaptable That is why it is called an approach Now we can say that Communicative Language Teaching has changed language education by making communication its main goal Its principles include learner-centeredness fluency integration of skills and use of authentic tasks Unlike strict methods CLT is an approach because it offers a broad framework not fixed techniques It allows teachers to adapt according to context while keeping communication as the focus Despite challenges CLT remains the most influential and practical way to teach languages today
