What are the five conditions Faustus sets down in the contract?

In “Doctor Faustus” by Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593), Faustus makes a dangerous deal with the devil. He signs a contract and gives his soul to Lucifer in exchange for 24 years of unlimited power and knowledge. Faustus also sets five conditions in the contract. Here are the conditions:

Become a Spirit: Firstly, Faustus wants to be a spirit in “form and substance”

> whenever he wants. This means he wishes to have magical powers like a spirit, so he can do supernatural things.

Mephistophilis as His Servant: Secondly, Faustus says Mephistophilis must obey all his orders like a personal servant. He says:

“Mephistophilis shall be his servant, and at his command.”

Mephistophilis Must Do Anything for Him: The third condition says Mephistophilis must do anything Faustus asks. Memphistophilis must bring anything Faustus desires.

Invisibility at Home: Fourthly, Faustus wants Mephistophilis to be invisible when he is in his room or house. He says:

“That he shall be in his chamber or house invisible.”

Mephistophilis Must Change Shape: Lastly, Mephistophilis must appear in any shape Faustus likes. Mephistophilis cannot refuse. If Faustus wants him to look like an animal, a king, or a monster, he must obey.

In short, these five conditions show that Faustus wants power, pleasure, and freedom. But in return, he gives his soul to Lucifer forever. This is the beginning of his tragic fall.
