What was the doctor s report about her condition In Han Kang s Present short story The Fruit of My Woman the wife s strange illness confuses everyone Her body changes but no doctor can explain why When she finally visits a doctor he says everything is normal His report shows how the human world fails to understand her transformation The Visit to the Hospital The Doctor s Test After her body grows weak her husband tells her to go to the hospital She does so alone The doctor checks her with machines He uses a cold stick on her stomach He looks at her organs on a monitor Then he says It s normal There s nothing wrong with anything there He cannot find any sickness in her stomach liver or kidneys He repeats Stomach liver uterus kidneys they re all fine The wife knows he is wrong Her

body is not fine It is slowly changing from the inside But no machine can see her truth The Doctor s Blindness The World s Ignorance The doctor represents science and society He only believes what he can see He cannot see her soul s pain or her slow transformation The wife feels unseen She thinks the doctor can not see nbsp These organs were slowly atrophying nbsp Her organs are drying like a dying plant The report of normal becomes meaningless The Wife s Pain Her Hidden Reality After the test she vomits in the subway station She bends on the floor She cries in pain The doctor told her that her sickness is mental not physical He thinks it is all imagination But the wife knows her body is leaving its human form Her mind and body are moving toward nature The doctor s report says she is normal but she is not The machines fail to read her change Her transformation is not an illness Her transformation is her escape from the human world into nature
