a platinum chain The narrator says that the chain was truly good enough for the watch Della s sacrifice is painful She cuts her beauty She cuts her pride She gives all for Jim Jim Gives up His Family Treasure Jim has one treasure It is his gold watch It belonged to his father and grandfather It is a family memory It is pride The narrator says Jim could make King Solomon jealous with his watch But Jim is poor He earns twenty dollars a week He wants Della to smile on Christmas So he sells his watch He buys The Combs The narrator describes them nbsp Beautiful combs pure tortoise shell with jewelled rims nbsp Jim s sacrifice is heavy He gives away history He gives away his pride Whose Sacrifice is Greater Both gifts cannot be used Della has no hair Jim has no watch But their sacrifice shows true love Della loses beauty Jim loses family pride Della loses something that can grow again Jim loses something that can never be returned The narrator finally says nbsp Everywhere they are wisest They are the magi nbsp This shows both are wise Both give from the heart But Jim s sacrifice is a little greater He gives away his family treasure forever Their gifts cannot be used yet their love becomes bright Della loses beauty Jim loses history His loss is deeper His gift is greater Their hearts shine above all things
