Brief Biography – Edgar Allan Poe (19th January 1809 – 7th October 1849)
Edgar Allan Poe was born on 19 January 1809 in Boston, United States. His father, David Poe, was an actor, and his mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, was also a professional actress. Poe lost both of his parents at a very young age. Later, he was adopted by the family of a businessman named John Allan and was raised in Richmond, Virginia. He studied in boarding schools in the United Kingdom and later attended the University of Virginia. He also served in the army for some time, but his true interest was in writing.
In 1827, his first poetry collection was published and gained attention in the literary world. His major works include Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (1840), The Raven and Other Poems (1845), and many famous short stories. Poe is regarded as the pioneer of modern detective fiction. In the later part of his life, financial and mental troubles affected him deeply. He died on 7 October 1849 in Baltimore, United States, under unclear and mysterious circumstances.
