Text Analysis
Lonely Walk on a Frozen Swamp: The speaker of the poem is walking alone in a cold, frozen swamp on a gray winter day. At first, he feels tired and thinks about turning back. But then he decides to walk a little farther just to see what lies ahead. The snow is hard and supports his steps, except in a few soft spots where his foot sinks in. Everywhere he looks, he sees tall, thin trees that all look the same. Because of this, he cannot tell exactly where he is. He only knows that he is far away from home and surrounded by nature.
A Small Bird: While walking, he notices a small bird flying in front of him. The bird is afraid of the speaker and always keeps a tree between them when it lands. The bird does not make any sound, as if it thinks the man might harm it. The speaker guesses that the bird fears he wants to take one of its white tail feathers. He laughs to himself, thinking how foolish the bird is to believe something like this. The bird is like those people who think everything others say or do is meant for them.
The Wood-Pile: But soon, the man forgets about the bird because he finds something more interesting. He sees an old pile of wood. He stops to look at it carefully. The pile is made of cut and split maple wood, neatly stacked into a block measuring four feet by four feet by eight feet. The speaker notices that no one has come near it recently because there are no footprints or sled tracks in the snow. The pile looks very old, maybe from years ago. The wood has turned gray, the bark is peeling off, and the pile has sunk a little into the ground. Wild plants like clematis vines have wrapped themselves around the pile, almost tying it up like a bundle.
The speaker realizes that whoever cut and stacked this wood must have worked very hard, but then forgot about it completely. That person must have moved on to other new tasks, leaving this wood here to slowly rot away. The speaker finds this idea both sad and meaningful — the woodpile, once made for a fireplace, now lies useless and abandoned in the frozen swamp, slowly decaying.
