Out and Out Summary
The poem “Out, Out” is about a young boy who works in a sawmill. The poem begins with some immediate description. The mill is making a kind of noise, the wood smells sweet, etc.
Then the poet returns to his description. The working day is almost over. The boy's sister came to call him for food. He is trying to finish the job quickly. Just then he lost control of the saw. His hand fell under the saw. He was taken to hospital. He begged his sister repeatedly not to cut off his hand. But by that time the hand was cut off. The doctor tried to save him but he died immediately. There was nothing for anyone to do here. Then everyone goes back to their work. Busy people don't have time to think about death.
