Simple, Complex, and Compound বোঝার আগে phrase and clause বুঝতে হবে। খুব সংক্ষেপে এটি আমরা জেনে নেইঃ
Phrase: একটি শব্দ গুচ্ছ যার কোন subject and verb নেই। এটি মুলত subject, object or any event সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত তথ্য প্রদান করে।
Clause: Clause ও একটি শব্দগুচ্ছ। কিন্তু এর রয়েছে subject ও predicate. Clause স্বাধীন এবং পরাধীন উভয়ই হয়।
- Simple Sentence: যে sentence একটি স্বাধীন/independent Clause (যে Clause অন্নের উপর নির্ভর না করেই অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে পারে) নিয়ে গঠিত তাকে Simple Sentence বলে।
- Complex Sentence: যে sentence এ একটি স্বাধীন এবং একটি পরাধীন/dependent Clause থাকে এবং dependent clause টি since, as, because, wh-word, till, until, though, although, if, even though, as much as, while, whereas ইত্যাদি conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে।
- Compound Sentence: যে sentence এ দুইটি independent clause কিছু co-ordinating conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে তাকে Compound Sentence বলে। Co-ordinating conjunction গুল হলঃ for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
Sentence তিনটির গঠনগত পরিবর্তন শেখার আগে আমরা একটি ছক দেখে নেই যা আমাদের পরবর্তী পদক্ষেপ গুলোতে সহযোগিতা করবেঃ

চরম সত্য কথা হল Simple, Complex, and Compound এ নির্দিষ্ট নিয়ম সবসময় কার্যকারী নয়। এই অংশে ভালো করতে হলে ভাষাগত জ্ঞান থাকতে হবে। বিশেষ করে, phrase থেকে clause এবং clause থেকে phrase রপান্তর করা জানতে হবে। সর্বোপরি, এই অংশে ভালো দক্ষতা অর্জন করতে পারলে আপনার free hand writing ও সমৃদ্ধ হবে। এখানে, আমরা কিছু নির্দিষ্ট নিয়ম থেকে একটি শক্ত ধারণা তৈরির লক্ষে কিছু step লক্ষ্য করবঃ
Simple to Compound
Rule-1: Simple sentence এ Present participle phrase থাকলে Phrase টিকে বাক্যের Clause টির tense অনুযায়ী একটি main clause এ পরিণত করতে হবে।
Simple: Eating rice, I went to school.
Compound: I ate rice, and I went to school.
Simple: The weather being fine, we started our journey.
Compound: The weather was fine, and we started our journey.
Rule-2. Too…to থাকলে তার পরিবর্তে complex sentence এ so…that+বাক্য এর subject+can not/could not+ Ext. (verb present=can; verb past=could) । এটা complex থেকে compound শিখতে সুবিধা হবে তাই এমন টি করা। ✪✪✪
Simple: He is too weak to walk.
Complex: He is so weak that he cannot walk.
Compound: He is very weak and cannot walk.
এখানে Complex sentence এর so এর স্থানে very এর that এর স্থানে and বসে।

Rule-3: Simple sentence এ to+base form of verb থাকলে সেক্ষেত্রে তাকে Complex sentence এ পরিবর্তন করে Compound sentence করলে আপনাদের সুবিধা হবে। পরীক্ষায় কিন্তু আবার এটা করা যাবে না। আমাদের উপরের ছক টি দেখলে বা মুখস্ত করতে পারলে এই পরিবর্তন করতে আপনাদের সুবিধা হবে।
Simple: He went there to meet his aunt.
Complex: He went there so that he could meet his aunt.
Compound: He went there and wanted to meet his aunt.
Rule-4: Simple sentence এ Perfect participle থাকলে সেখানে have/ had ব্যবহার করে Compound করতে হবে। এক্ষেত্রে phrase এবং clause এর অর্থের সামঞ্জস্য বজায় রাখতে হবে।
Simple: Having forgotten him, I went outside.
Compound: I had forgotten him and went outside.
Simple to Complex
Rule-1: Present participle যুক্ত phrase গুলোকে when/ since/ As দ্বারা complex করতে হবে। এক্ষেত্রে, গঠন হবে এরুপঃ when/ since/ As+subject+participle এর verb form+বাকি অংশ।
Simple: Closing the door, I went to sleep.
Complex: When I closed the door, I went to sleep.
Simple: Being poor, he cannot buy his food.
Complex: As he is poor, he cannot buy his food.
N:B: দুটি clause এর মাঝামাঝি কমা (,) বসবে। প্রদত্ত phrase দ্বারা সময়কে নির্দেশ করলে when, কারন বুঝালে since/as.
Rule 2: Too….To থাকলে So That হয়।
Simple: The man was too old to walk.
Comple: The man was so old that he could not walk.
Rule-3: Simple sentence-এ Infinitive থাকলে So that দ্বারা উহার Complex করতে হয়।
Simple: The industrious always work hard to prosper in life.
Complex: The industrious always work hard so that they can prosper in life.
Rule-4: Simple sentence এ In spite of অথবা Despite থাকলে complex sentence এ Though অথবা Although ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
Simple: Despite his hard work, he was not successful.
Complex: Though he worked hard, he was not successful.
Rule-5: Simple sentence এ because of থাকলে নিচের গঠন মোতাবেক since/as ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
Simple: Because of his illness, he could not attend the meeting.
Complex Since/As he was ill, he could not attend the meeting.
Rule-6: কোন Noun + Present participle অথবা subject + verb + Adjective + Noun, simple sentence এ থাকলে নিম্নরুপ উপায়ে relative pronoun ব্যবহার করতে হয়। ✪✪✪
Simple: I saw a boy swimming in the pond.
Complex: I saw a bird who was swimming in the pond.
Rule-7: Simple sentence এ verb +object + present participle থাকলে একটি connective clause দ্বারা complex করতে হয়।
Simple: I saw him reading.
Complex: I saw that he was reading.
Rule-8: Introductory there/ it যোগে complex sentence গঠনের উপায় নিম্নরুপঃ
Simple: Honesty is the best policy.
Complex: It is honesty which is the best policy.
Compound to Simple
Rule-1: And দ্বারা যুক্ত compound sentence এর উভয় clause এর subject একই হলেঃ শুরুতে verb+ing…. And উঠে গিয়ে কমা+২য় clause।
Compound: I went there and met him.
Simple: Going there, I met him.
Rule-2: And এর উভয় পার্শ্বের subject ভিন্ন হলে এবং প্রথম clause এ be verb main verb হলে ঐ be verb এর পরিবর্তে being বসে + and উঠে যায়+ বাকি সব অপরিবর্তিত থাকে।
Compound: The trial was over, and the guilt was brought to book.
Simple: The trial being over, the guilt was brought to book.
N.B. Be verb এর স্থলে have verb থাকলে having হয়। মনে রাখতে হবে simple, complex, compound এর ক্ষেত্রে tense এর কোন পরিবর্তন হয়না।
Compound: Mahi had finished his work and returned home.
Simple: Having finished his work, Mahi returned home.
Rule-3: Compound sentence এর দু’টি clause but দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকলে: In spite of/despite+ possessive of subject+….+but উঠে গিয়ে কমা বসবে + বাকি অংশ। ✪✪✪
Compound: He was poor but honest.
Simple: Despite his being poor, he was honest.
Rule-4: Not only …. but also দ্বারা ২টি বিষয়কে যুক্ত করলে নিম্ন লিখিত উপায়ে besides ব্যবহার করতে হয়।
Compound: He not only planted the seeds but also watered them.
Simple: Besides planting them, he watered the seeds.
Rule-5: Imperative sentence এ and থাকলে by+gerund এবং or থাকলে without + gerund এই গঠন অনুসারে বাক্য রুপান্তর করতে হয়।
Compound: Go and catch the fallen star.
Simple: By going, catch the fallen star.
Compound: Read attentively, or you will fail.
Simple: Without reading attentively, you will fail.
Compound to Complex
Rule-1. And দ্বারা যুক্ত compound sentence এর যে clause টি দ্বারা কারণ বুঝায় তার পূর্বে since বসে এবং and উঠে গিয়ে একটা কমা বসে এবং সময় বুঝালে তার পূর্বে When ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Compound: Rahman was ill and could not go to school.
Complex: Since Rahman was ill, he could not go to school.
Compound: It was 7 O’clock, and he went for a walk.
Complex: When it was 7 O’clock, he went for a walk
Rule-2: Compound sentence এর clause দু’টি but দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকলে নিম্নক্ত উপায়ে Though/Although ব্যাবহ্রিত হবে।
Compound: He performed well but did not get the prize. ✪✪✪
Complex: Though/Although he performed well, he did not get the prize.
Rule-3: Or থাকলে If+not.
Compound: Work hard, or you cannot prosper.
Complex: If you do not work hard, you cannot prosper.

Complex to Simple
Rule-1: Since/as/ when দ্বারা শুরু হওয়া complex sentence এর উভয় subject যদি একই হয়ঃ since, as, when থেক Subject পর্যন্ত বাদ যাবে+verb+ing+second clause.
Complex: When I closed the door, I went to sleep.
Simple: Closing the door, I went to sleep.
Rule-2: Since, as, when দ্বারা গঠিত Complex sentence এর subject যদি ভিন্ন হয়: since, as, when বাদ যাবে + ঐ clause এর verb+ing (be verb=being; have verb=having)
Complex: The guilt was brought to book when the trial was over.
Simple: The trial being over, the guilt was brought to book.
Rule-3: If clause positive হলে By + gerund হবে এবং If clause negative হলে without + gerund হবে।
Complex: If you do not work hard, you will fail.
Simple: Without working hard, you will fail.
Complex: If you go, you will catch the fallen star.
Simple: By going, you will catch the fallen star.
Rule-4: So… that থাকলে too…. + verb+বাকি অংশ।
Complex: He is so weak that he cannot walk.
Simple: He is too weak to walk.
Rule-5: So that এবং in order that থাকলে তাদের পরিবর্তে to+verb+বাকি অংশ। .
Complex: He worked hand so that he could be successful
Simple: He worked hard to be successful.
Rule-6: Though এবং Although থাকলে Inspite of / Despite এর মাদ্ধমে নিম্ন উপায়ে পরিবর্তন করতে হয়।
Complex: Though he worked hard, he was not successful.
Simple: Despite his hard work, he was not successful.
Rule-7: Noun clause কে noun phrase এ পরিণত করে simple sentence করতে হয়।
Complex: Whatever he said during the meeting upset her greatly.
Simple: His words during the meeting upset her greatly.
Complex to Compound
Rule-1: Complex sentence এ since/As/When থাকলে তা তুলে দিয়ে দুই clause এর মাঝে and বসাতে হবে।
Complex: The guilt was brought to book when the trial was over.
Compound: The trial was over, and the guilt was brought to book.
Rule-2: Though/Although থাকলে তা তুলে দিয়ে দিয়ে দুই clause এর মাঝে but ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
Complex: Though/Although he performed well, he did not get the prize.
Compound: He performed well but did not get the prize.
Rule-3: Relative pronoun যুক্ত complex sentence এর relative pronoun এর স্থলে and এবং relative pronoun এর জন্য it, he, she, this, that ইত্যাদি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু অনুসারে হয়।
Complex: I know the boy who is swimming in the pond.
Compound: I know the boy, and he is swimming in the pond.
Rule-4: Complex sentence এ If যুক্ত বাক্য negative হলে or হবে এবং affirmative হলে and হবে এবং বাক্য টি হবে Imperative।
Complex: If you do not do, you will die.
Compound: Do or die.
Complex: If you move, you will die.
Compound: Move and die.
