Waiting for Godot Literary Device

Figures of Speech

  • Irony: This happens when what is said is the opposite of what is meant or what happens. For example, Estragon says, “Nothing to be done,” but they keep waiting and trying to do something. It shows their helplessness, but also how they cannot stop living.
  • Paradox: A statement that seems impossible but tells the truth. For example, they say “Nothing to be done,” yet they keep waiting and doing things. It shows the conflict between action and meaninglessness.
  • Symbolism: Things or characters that stand for bigger ideas. For example,
  • Godot: Symbol of Hope and Meaning. Vladimir and Estragon wait for Godot, who never comes. Godot represents hope or help that people expect in life but may never get.
  • The Tree: Symbol of Life and Death. The tree is the only thing that changes between Act 1 and Act 2. It shows the passing of time and the closeness of life and death.
  • Waiting: Symbol of Life’s Uncertainty. Waiting for Godot means waiting for meaning or answers in life. It shows how people often wait without knowing what for, and this waiting fills their time.
  • Pozzo and Lucky: Symbol of Power and Servitude. Pozzo is the master, and Lucky is his servant. Their relationship shows control, dependence, and unfairness in life.

Main Message:
