What is the significance of dream and memory in Echo Dream and memory are the two most important ideas in the poem Echo by Christina Rossetti They help the speaker stay close to the person she has lost In real life she cannot meet her beloved She cannot speak to him She cannot touch him So she turns to dreams Dreams become a safe place Dreams become a door back to love Only in dreams can she see his face again Only in dreams can she feel alive She even says that dreams let her live again This shows how important dreams are to her heart Memory is also very important Memory holds the past Memory keeps the picture of the beloved It keeps his cheeks his eyes and his voice These memories are sweet but also painful They make her happy for a moment But they also make her

sad because those days are gone She calls them finished years This means she knows the past will not return Still memories stay with her They give her comfort They give her sadness They shape her dreams Dream and memory work together Memory brings the beloved to her mind Dreams bring the beloved to her heart Memory creates the picture Dreams make the picture feel real for a short time Both show her deep longing Both show her deep love They help her hold the person she cannot have in life
