About Christina Rossetti

Life, Works, and Legacy

Christina Rossetti was born on 5 December 1830 in London, England. Her father, Gabriele Rossetti, was an Italian poet and scholar, and her mother, Frances Rossetti, was an educated and deeply religious woman. From childhood, Rossetti grew up in a literary environment. Her two brothers, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti, were also renowned figures in literature and the arts. During her adolescence, she suffered from periods of illness, and these experiences brought a sense of restraint, melancholy, and spirituality into her poetry. Although Rossetti did not receive formal higher education, she received a rich and well-rounded education at home.   She began writing poetry at a very young age, and her poetry collection Goblin Market and Other Poems, published in 1862, established her reputation in English literature. Her writings beautifully express themes of religious feeling, self-sacrifice, love, nature, and the inner conflicts of women. Some of her notable works include The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems (1866) and A Pageant and Other Poems (1881). Rossetti also wrote several poems for children. In the later years of her life, she suffered from serious illness and cancer. She passed away on 29 December 1894 in London. Her poetry remains valued today for its deep sensitivity and spiritual depth. Details of Christina Rossetti
