Text Analysis

The Storm and the Sleeping Baby

The poet is walking. Outside, the wind is howling loudly, and the sea is rough. But inside the house, his newborn baby daughter is peacefully sleeping in her cradle. Yeats Prays for a Balanced Beauty

And have no business but dispensing round

Their magnanimities of sound,

Nor but in merriment begin a chase,

O may she live like some green laurel

Paraphrase: I pray that my daughter may grow like a hidden tree — strong, peaceful, and full of life. I want her thoughts to be like a linnet bird’s song — happy and full of joy. She should spread goodness around her just like birds spread their music. I hope she will live a simple and cheerful life. Her happiness should come from peace, not from quarrels or show. Like a green laurel tree, I want her to be rooted in one dear place — steady, calm, and full of love and purity.

Translation: আমি প্রার্থনা করি, আমার মেয়ে যেন এক নির্জন গাছের মতো বড় হয়ে ওঠে — শক্তিশালী, শান্ত আর প্রাণবন্ত। আমি চাই তার চিন্তাগুলো যেন লিনেট পাখির গানের মতো হয় — খুশি আর আনন্দে পূর্ণ। যেন সে তার আশেপাশে সুখ আর কল্যাণ ছড়িয়ে দেয়, যেমন পাখি তার সুর ছড়িয়ে দেয়। আমি চাই সে যেন সহজ ও আনন্দময় জীবন যাপন করে। তার সুখ আসুক শান্তি থেকে, ঝগড়া বা অহংকার থেকে নয়। যেন এক সবুজ লরেল গাছের মতো সে নিজের প্রিয় জায়গায় শিকড় গেড়ে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে — শান্ত, স্থির ও ভালোবাসায় পূর্ণ হয়ে।

My mind, because the minds that I have loved,

The sort of beauty that I have approved,

Prosper but little, has dried up of late,

Yet knows that to be choked with hate

May well be of all evil chances chief.

If there’s no hatred in a mind

Assault and battery of the wind

Can never tear the linnet from the leaf.

Paraphrase: My mind feels dry and tired because the people I once loved were full of pride and hate. I have learned that hatred is the worst thing in the world. A person without hate cannot be harmed by any storm of life.

Translation: আমার মন এখন শুকনো আর ক্লান্ত, কারণ যাদের আমি ভালোবেসেছিলাম, তারা অহংকার আর ঘৃণায় ভরা ছিল। আমি বুঝেছি, ঘৃণা পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে খারাপ জিনিস। যার মনে ঘৃণা নেই, জীবনের কোনো ঝড়ই তাকে নষ্ট করতে পারে না।

Stanza 8

An intellectual hatred is the worst,

So let her think opinions are accursed.

Have I not seen the loveliest woman born

Out of the mouth of Plenty’s horn,

Because of her opinionated mind

Barter that horn and every good

By quiet natures understood

For an old bellows full of angry wind?

Paraphrase: The worst kind of hatred is intellectual hatred — when someone thinks only their opinions are right. I have seen the most beautiful woman (here, the poet means Maud Gonne, who rejected his love) lose all peace and blessings because of her proud and angry mind. She gave up goodness and calmness for anger and argument.

Translation: সবচেয়ে খারাপ ঘৃণা হলো বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক ঘৃণা — যখন কেউ ভাবে শুধু তার মতামতই ঠিক। আমি দেখেছি সবচেয়ে সুন্দর এক নারীকে (অর্থাৎ মড গান, যিনি কবির ভালবাসাকে একাধিকবার প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছিলেন), যে তার অহংকারী ও রাগী মনের কারণে সব শান্তি হারিয়েছিল। সে রাগ আর তর্কের জন্য ভালোবাসা আর শান্তি ভুলে গিয়েছিল।

Stanza 9

Considering that, all hatred driven hence,

The soul recovers radical innocence

And learns at last that it is self-delighting,

Self-appeasing, self-affrighting,

And that its own sweet will is Heaven’s will;

She can, though every face should scowl

And every windy quarter howl

Or every bellows burst, be happy still.

Paraphrase: So, I pray that my daughter will have no hatred in her heart. Then her soul will become pure again, full of natural innocence. She will learn that true happiness comes from within. Her heart will be calm and peaceful even if the world around her is full of anger.

Translation: তাই আমি প্রার্থনা করি, আমার মেয়ের মনে যেন কোনো ঘৃণা না থাকে। তাহলে তার আত্মা আবার নিষ্পাপ হয়ে উঠবে। সে শিখবে, সত্যিকারের সুখ আসে নিজের ভেতর থেকে। পৃথিবী বিশৃঙ্খলাপূর্ণ হলেও তার মন থাকবে শান্ত ও আনন্দে পূর্ণ।

Stanza 10

And may her bridegroom bring her to a house

Where all’s accustomed, ceremonious;

For arrogance and hatred are the wares

Peddled in the thoroughfares.

How but in custom and in ceremony

Are innocence and beauty born?

Ceremony’s a name for the rich horn,

And custom for the spreading laurel tree.

Paraphrase: Finally, I pray that when she marries, her husband will take her to a home where customs and traditions are followed. A home full of peace, manners, and love. I believe real beauty and innocence are born from such a life. For me, ceremony is like the rich Horn of Plenty, and custom is like the strong laurel tree.
Translation: শেষে আমি প্রার্থনা করি, যেন বিয়ের পর তার স্বামী তাকে এমন এক ঘরে নিয়ে যায়, যেখানে নিয়ম, সংস্কার ও ভালো আচরণ মনে চলা হয়। এমন ঘরেই থাকে শান্তি, সৌন্দর্য ও ভালোবাসা। আমার কাছে রীতি হলো “Horn of Plenty”—অর্থাৎ রীতিনীতি মেনে চললে জীবনে আনন্দ ও প্রাচুর্য আসে, আর সংস্কার মানে এক শক্তিশালী লরেল গাছের মতো স্থিরতা ও ঐতিহ্য।
