The Appearance of the Magi: In the poem, the speaker imagines the wise men, or Magi, who visited baby Jesus. He sees them in his mind, wearing old, stiff clothes. They look pale and unhappy. They appear and disappear in the sky. Their faces are old, like stones beaten by rain. They wear silver helmets and float side by side. 

Their Endless Search: Their eyes are still searching. They want to find something they did not find at Calvary, the place where Jesus was crucified. They are still looking for the mysterious truth they saw when they visited baby Jesus in the stable.
