The Patriot

The Patriot Themes

Public Opinion: The poem shows how quickly public opinion can change. One year ago, the Patriot was treated like a hero. People decorated the streets, rang church bells, and threw flowers to welcome him. They loved him so much that they would have done anything for him. But just one year later, the same people hate him. Instead of cheering, they throw stones at him. They take him to be punished. This shows people can be selfish and forgetful.

Faith in God: The Patriot feels betrayed by the people. But he does not lose hope. He knows that people are unfair, cruel, and quick to change their minds. They rewarded his service with punishment instead of honor. But he believes that God is different. God is kind and just. The Patriot is wrongly punished by the people. But God will do justice and reward him. So, the poem suggests that true peace comes from having faith in God.
